The Elixir of Clean Water and Sanitation

Aspen Ideas Festival Spotlight Health 2015
Aspen Institute

Clean water and sanitation, those most basic of human needs, are in alarmingly short supply in many parts of the world. More than one billion people lack access to safe drinking water, and 1.6 million people die every year from diarrheal diseases largely as a result. California has a single year’s supply of water left in its reservoirs, and the devastating drought is certain to transform its agricultural economy. But scientists and product designers are thinking in new ways about how to provide this pillar of healthy living. What combination of technology, regulation, and behavior change will put clean water and sanitation in universal reach? From “toilet malls” and filters to ecosanitation, where are the most promising advances?
